City introduction
Kentville is the shire town of Kings County, Nova Scotia, set in what the Town describes as one of the most beautiful and richest agricultural districts in North America, in the heart of the province's apple industry. The town owes its location to a fordable stretch of the Cornwallis River used by the Mi'kmaq, the area's earliest inhabitants; the river was first known as the Grand Habitant by the Acadians, and the narrowing of its banks near the later railway station made a convenient low-tide crossing and, in the 1870s, a favourable place to build a bridge.
The surrounding land was developed by French settlers who used dyking, including aboiteaus, to reclaim salt marshes from the sea and turn them into fertile farmland. After the expulsion of the Acadian population in 1755, the land was settled by New England Planters, some 8,000 of whom came to Nova Scotia between 1760 and 1768. Today, the Town states, Kentville has the highest year-round population of any residential centre in the Annapolis Valley, and its population has been steadily increasing.

Total residential tax rate chart
Kentville total residential tax rate, 2019/20–2026/27
Bars: Kentville total residential tax rate, by fiscal year, in dollars per $100 of assessment.
Bars only. No comparison lines are drawn: a tax rate is not a percentage change, so it cannot share the percent axis used on the other provinces' combined charts. The scope notes explain the calibre.

Total residential tax rate trend
The trend uses one measure only: the total residential tax rate in the provincial table's calibre. Each row is the rate for that fiscal year on that one measure. A year with no verified rate is shown as No data, and no earlier rate is ever repeated into a later year.

Separate note — 2026/27 official points, not the rate series
This note is separate from the rate series above and is not part of it. It records official 2026/27 points that are stated on a different basis — general rates, average bill figures, or a class-wide budget wording — so they stay visible without being merged into the total residential rate series.
Base residential rate raised by 4 cents, from 1.4262 to 1.4662 per $100 of assessment (Town of Kentville, 2026-2027 budget media release, https://kentville.ca/sites/default/files/media/files/2026-04-14%20Media%20Release%20Budget%20.pdf).
The Town's own budget documents describe the residential and resource classes as rising 2.8%, with an average household paying about $9 more per month. This +2.8% is the Town's official wording for the residential and resource classes in its budget documents; it is not the calibre of the rate series above and is not presented on this page as Kentville's "increase" figure (Town of Kentville, Report to Public 2026-2027 Approved Operating Budget, https://kentville.ca/sites/default/files/town-files/2026-04/Report%20to%20Public%202026-2027%20Approved%20Operating%20Budget.pdf; Town of Kentville, 2026-2027 budget media release, https://kentville.ca/sites/default/files/media/files/2026-04-14%20Media%20Release%20Budget%20.pdf).
Method
This page uses one measure only, every year: the total residential tax rate in the provincial table's calibre (dollars per $100 of assessment).
The 2019/20–2025/26 values are the Government of Nova Scotia Open Data Municipal Property Tax Rates table, checked row by row for this municipality. The 2026/27 value, where one is shown, is from the municipality's own adopted budget or official tax-rate document for that year.
Nova Scotia's fiscal year runs April 1 to March 31. Eligible owner-occupied homes are under the provincial Assessment Cap (CAP), which limits the annual rise in taxable assessment; individual bills can therefore move differently from the rate.
How to read this page
Bars are the Kentville total residential tax rate for each fiscal year. The axis is a rate axis, not a percentage axis.
A taller bar is a higher rate; it says nothing by itself about how any one household's bill changed, because bills also move with assessed values and the Assessment Cap.
A year shown as “No data” has no bar. No rate is carried forward from the year before, and no value is interpolated.
Official points stated on other bases (general rates, average bill figures) are kept in the separate note, never merged into the series.
